Marsh Supermarkets and Its Customers

Help Raise Money for American Heart Association

Sale of postcards amounts to $14,500 donation

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 1, 2008) Marsh Supermarkets, Inc., with the help of its customers, has raised $14,500 for the American Heart Association through its sale of $1 postcards.

The postcards, which were sold and displayed in each Marsh and O’Malia’s location in both Indiana and Ohio, were a part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement.  According to the American Heart Association, Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 460,000 women per year, approximately one woman per minute.  Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association's national movement to make women aware of their risk for heart disease, the No. 1 cause of death among women, and take action.  In honor of Mother’s Day, Marsh and O’Malia’s customers were encouraged to purchase a postcard and mail it to important women in their lives.  Proceeds from the sales of the postcards will be used for heart disease education and research.

Marsh and O’Malia’s associates were encouraged to get involved in the fundraising drive and Candy Carlson, a cashier at the Marsh store located at 10679 North Michigan Road in Zionsville, Indiana, won a prize for her dedication to the effort.  This Zionsville Marsh location also sold the most postcards of all stores overall.

“We’re pleased to be able to help raise money for such a worthwhile cause and outstanding organization,” said Connie Gardner, Marsh Senior Director of Community Relations.  “We’re proud of our store associates; they exemplify the ideal that one person can make a difference in their community.”  Gardner added her thanks to the many Marsh customers who so generously purchased the postcards and made this $14,500 gift possible.

Elizabeth Cisco, Vice President of Marketing and Development at St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana, and American Heart Association midwest affiliate board member states, "As the City Goes Red exclusive sponsor for Indianapolis, we're passionately dedicated to helping women fight back against heart disease.  We applaud Marsh for stepping forward with significant contributions to this lifesaving cause.  Marsh's efforts not only raised vital funds for research, but also helped reach women on a personal level to heighten awareness of their own risk factors."
