Area Hospital Ranked Among Nation's Best For Heart Care

St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana is Indiana's only hospital to receive "Above Average" ranking for saving lives when it comes to heart attacks.

INDIANAPOLIS, July 2007
  -  In it's first-ever ranking of hospitals across the nation, the federal government has cited St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana as one of only 17 hospitals that ranks "above average" when it comes to saving lives from heart attacks.

The ranking includes more than 4,800 hospitals nationally.  St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana is the only hospital in the state to receive the government's "above average" ranking.

The rankings were released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services.  The study considered death rates from heart attack, which is a blockage of flow to the heart.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the rankings are based on a 30-day risk-adjusted death rate "that relies on Medicare claims and enrollment information.  The model predicts patient deaths for any cause within 30 days of hospital admission for heart attack, whether the patients die while still in the hospital or after discharge."

The department said 30-day mortality was used because it is the time period when deaths are most likely to be related to the care patients received in the hospital.

"This just confirms what we've believed for some time," said John Stewart, President and CEO of St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana.  "We've worked hard to provide excellent heart care for our patients, and to be recognized as among the best hospitals in America for heart care is quite an honor."
