Pacemaker installation and replacement.
When heart rates slow or become irregular, patients may require a surgical procedure to implant a pacemaker: a device that sends electrical impulses to the heart to keep it beating regularly. It’s a simple device. When the heart is beating normally, the pacemaker waits and does nothing. But if the beat becomes too slow, the pacemaker sends an impulse to get the heart back on track.
Pacemaker batteries usually require replacement after five to 10 years. On occasion, pacemakers also need replaced. The battery replacement procedure is typically shorter and simpler than the original installation of the pacemaker.
